Jon Murrill writes that his photorealistic drawings portray “a contemporary perspective on the human spirit.”
Extreme in detail and size, Murrill’s charcoal portrait series has great impact, confronting the viewer with everyday faces featuring all the rough edges and most hair out of place. Murrill affirms that, “Overall, my work does not represent an idealistic beauty.” His insightful art reaches into the realm of the self, somehow grasping a moment when heart and life are visible in the wrinkles, the unusual shape of the face, and a light in the eyes. The artist’s solo exhibit featuring the portraits will be held from December 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018 in the MOarts Gallery at the Moneta/ Smith Mountain Lake Library.
A versatile artist, Jonathan Murrill is adept in many different media and has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Radford University and a professional teaching certificate in Visual Arts. Since 2012, Murrill has worked as an adjunct instructor in drawing, art history and watercolor at Virginia Western Community College and as an art instructor in Roanoke high schools. In his artist biography he states that “Through teaching I hope to create a passion for art among the many students that I instruct.” Murrill uses technology as a teaching tool as well as traditional materials, and in 2013, he received a Foundation for Roanoke Valley grant for technology equipment in the high school classroom to enable instruction in graphic design. He has shown his work in fine arts centers, museums, and juried exhibitions throughout Virginia and the East coast. His website: www.murrillart.com has examples of his art including watercolors, oils, and charcoal drawings. In addition to his work on canvas and paper, Murrill is pictured standing by a mural he created on a wall at Valley View Mall in 2013.
