Details

Frederick Kahler was a known only to intimate group of people in Rappahannock County as a local resident who loved his simple, and recluse life on the dark side of Red Oak Mountain. His recent passing has left a stillness that will not be filled. Fred’s lifetime commitment as a scribe was to illustrate, through intricate pen and ink drawings, the existence of humanity, and all beings throughout the history of the universe. Kahler always declared he was just “The holder of the Pen” but for those of us who knew him, he was so much more, Universal Historian, Guru, Sage, Story-teller, Companion and Friend. Many of Fred’s pieces were birthed in our own sleepy hollow of Castleton, VA. Cherl Crews, Director of Living Sky Foundation had the honor and privilege of working closely with the artist over the past decade to catalog, introduce and share his lifetime collection. Fred was a founding member of the Sperryville ARTist Cooperative in Sperryville, VA and some of these same pieces that we shared there are are now housed in the collections of 3 major art museums around the country.

It is a grand accomplishment for any artist to be displayed on the walls of the Smithsonian and Fred was able to receive that honor before his passing. The work is finally where it belongs, safely showcased for the people of earth to enjoy. Frederick will be on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Collection of Self~Taught and Folk Art on the first floor through summer of 2018.

Please join us for this LSF Community Cause Event to raise the funds for a limited, second publishing of Frederick Kahler’s book, “The Art Speaks”. Pre-orders and donations will be accepted during this event, as well as online and via Paypal. Please join us for coffee and to share stories of the artist.
