The premier stop on the Northern Neck Artisan Trail, Rice’s Hotel / Hughlett’s Tavern will hold an Open House as part of the trail’s “Second Saturday Open Door Tour.” The Tavern’s Artisan Guilds will be demonstrating their skills. The Tavern “Heritage Arts Center” Gift Shoppe will be open, as will the Tavern Café.

The gift shoppe sells the handcrafted wares of over 75 local artisans and artists, including baskets, pottery, jewelry, knitted items, quilted items, woodworking, ironwork, hand-woven items, and more. Several artisans have studios on-site, including a weaver, a spinner, a jewelry-maker, and a decorative furniture painter.

The Tavern Café, operated by the Tavern’s Culinary Guild, serves homemade soups, fresh-baked breads, quiché, sweet treats, and other tasty specialties. The menu changes weekly depending on what the volunteers want to make.

The Tavern’s Spinners & Weavers Guild will be hosting a special program on weaving, entitled “The Weaving Process: From Concept to Product.” A number of looms will be set up, showing the various stages in the weaving process, including putting on a warp, threading, sleying the reed, and weaving itself. The public will be able to try their hand at each loom.

The Tavern Blacksmith Guild will be teaching “Blacksmithing 101” in their operational forge. Visitors are invited to watch.

The Tavern Woodworking Guild will be demonstrating wood turning, a fascinating method of making bowls, pepper grinders, Christmas ornaments, and more.

A member of the Tavern “Crafters” group will be demonstrating basic “Parchment Papercraft.” This crafting hobby involves the embossing, coloring and perforating of special parchment paper. You’ll see how it is possible to make the most beautiful paper lace with just few tools.

An historical landmark dating back to the late 1700’s, Rice’s Hotel / Hughlett’s Tavern is an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit operation. The Tavern is open weekly Thursday thru Saturday, 10 am - 2 pm.
