During the month of July, Crozet Artisan Depot proudly features pottery by local ceramic artist Nan Rothwell. Nan will be at the Second Saturday Opening Reception on July 14th from 3-5pm in the historic Crozet Train Depot.
Nan Rothwell has be making functional pottery in Central Virginia for nearly fifty years. Her pots are made to be used: to enhance the rituals of preparing and eating food, to hold flowers, to light a corner for reading.
In the artist’s words: “Making functional work connects me to the age-old tradition of artist craftsmen who make beautiful objects for daily use.”
After learning to make pots in England, Nan set up her first pottery studio in Crozet, not far from the historic Train Depot. She and her husband later moved to Nelson County where they built a home and a studio, residing there for 38 years. In 2014, they relocated to Charlottesville. Active nationally as a teacher for many years, Nan teaches pottery classes and workshops at City Clay in Charlottesville, at a variety of other venues, and online through TeachinArt.com.
