Description

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during

the month of July, is continuing to exhibit in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the Members’
Anniversary Judged Show which officially opened in June. All participants
exhibit the medium and artwork of their choosing. SVAC is proud that it is a
community-based organization that showcases and supports its talented members
with this annual exhibition. The exhibition was judged by Sigrid Eilertson, a
Charlottesville based artist and art facilitator. She is the previous owner of
Firefish Gallery and is an art therapist. She has a BFA in studio art and a MFA
in Art Therapy. In her own words: “I perceive my art as an extension of my
psyche. Life experiences have been woven
into the content of each work; these memories become the threads that literally
create layers on the canvas. My collages
in particular are overlapping layers of my own personal growth experiences
through the media of paper. The process
has become a metaphor for my utter existence… a mental road map in which art
therapy becomes the vehicle for catharsis.
Sometimes I utilize tangible mementos, train/bus/plane tickets, journal
entries, photographs, hair, etc… to create a story through paper collage on my
canvas. I have lived a full life,
traveling the hippy trail in Europe, having been a truck driver, working on a
Lakota Reservation in South Dakota, employment on a psychiatric ward for 10
years as an art therapist and most recently becoming a mother. All of these experiences have had a profound
effect on my art.” The award
winners selected by Eilertson are: 1st place – Rose Guterbock, 2nd
place- Lynn Hilton Conyers, 3rd place- Wanda Bird, Honorable
Mentions – Elisabeth Fitzhugh, Joe Garber, Tom Elliott, and J. Scott Robinson.
The Penny Cabell memorial Watercolor Award was presented to Carol Anderson. An
opening and awards ceremony was held Saturday, June 1 and the public meet, and
talked to the artists. The artwork will be on display until July 27 with the
art center closing from July 2-6 for the Fourth of July Holiday.
