Artist Statement:
After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelors of Fine Art in 1990, I experimented with many firing techniques until I found raku. With raku, each piece is heated in a small gas kiln, removed while red hot, and burned and reduced in combustible materials. This exciting and violent process mysteriously alters the glazes by flashing unpredictable hues and tones, making each work unique and irreproducible.
My new clay works have developed a spontaneous and fresh new life. Breaking free from traditional ideas, I combine wheel-thrown and hand-built forms with incised abstract designs to create figurative sculptures and vessels. Just allowing myself to have fun and play has opened up my creative window to a new clay world of possiblities. My goal is to create expressive clay works that intrigue, uplift or inspire and transform those who view them and their mystery.
