Our Juried Artisans

Our Juried Virginia Artisan members represent the highest quality craft that the commonwealth of Virginia has to offer.

Each Juried Virginia Artisan has gone through a rigorous standards process to ensure that the highest quality of craft is offered by our artisans. This juried status recognizes their level of expertise and involvement in craft, from the development of their media, to offering their products for sale to consumers.

Their level of accomplishment is noted on their artisan page as “Juried Virginia Artisan” with many having the distinction of “Professional” which indicates their achievement as a practicing artist entrepreneur or with the utmost distinction of “Master” which indicates their continued practice of their craft, achieving the highest quality of excellence and also their desire to share their knowledge with others through teaching, apprenticeships and/or mentorships.

We also welcome and support Virginia Artisan members who do not hold the juried distinction, such as our Next Generation Artisans or working artisans who have not yet applied for juried status. Some of these artisans can be seen on our Artisan Trails Network (via their trail regions).

What is An Artisan?

An Artisan creates objects of three dimensional craft, often to be used functionally, but always with a high degree of artistry and quality craftsmanship. For the Artisan, form follows function, and the work of the Artisan speaks to the simple honesty of that paradigm. The Artisan pours himself into his craft, making his quality objects with pride, honesty, and integrity. Whether using hand tools or machines, the Artisan takes no shortcuts that might compromise the quality of the work. The Artisan does not attempt to compete with the large scale manufacturer, and the amount of time taken to make a work of fine craft is secondary to the result. That the goal of the Artisan is to achieve heirloom quality is an unspoken assumption.

Check Back Often!
As we have recently launched our new website, our juried artisans have only just begun to create their artist pages.  Artisan pages are being added daily and soon we hope to showcase all ACV Juried Virginia Artisans who are actively practicing their craft.

Since ACV began its jury program, over 400 Virginia artisans have achieved the level of “Juried Virginia Artisan”, many receiving the professional distinction, with a select few reaching the level of “Master” or recognized by ACV’s honored “Award for Excellence”.
