Upon graduation from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Design I moved with my husband to Dahlgren, Virginia. For the next ten years I worked as a freelance artist, taught art classes, painted, exhibited, and sold my oils and watercolors.
After designing and building our new home which included a large studio, I decided a stained glass window in the main hallway was needed for privacy. Having worked a little with glass while in college I decided to take on the project myself. That two foot by five foot panel was my first and it totally changed by career.
Magic happens when you add rays of light dancing through the vast variety of types and colors available from brilliant cathedrals to mysterious opals and ring mottles. I had fallen in love with stained glass.
My deep appreciation of all things in nature and my love of stained glass make perfect partners for my designs.
I have continually endeavored to expand my knowledge in glass by taking classes with well known and respected leaders in the field of glass. Topics covered ranged from stained glass designs, composition, and reinforcement for architectural use to the design and use of fusing and sandblasting techniques for modern glass. These techniques enable me to add texture and a three dimensional aspect to my pieces. I have designed and fabricated panels as large as 5.5 feet by 7.5 feet and as small as just a few inches square.
Several galleries across Virginia have exhibited and sold my stained glass and sandblasted panes. It has been a pleasure working on commission with several interior designers and architects as well as private home owners and businesses in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, California, and Florida.
My work can be seen at Oak Crest Vineyard & Winery Artisan Gift Shop or call Dorothy, 540-663-4429.
