I create elegant classical furniture. Shape and function are graceful and appropriate. Woods and finishes are rich and polished. I use solid woods, veneers, brass and fine cloth and traditional construction techniques to evoke heirloom quality and feel. Marquetry is used to embellish surfaces and personalize pieces. I make marquetry pictures and clocks to enliven living spaces.
I also create decorated woodenware from this same place. They are “too pretty to use” but are meant to function for decades, and look good all the while.
In terms of technique – I use machines when their efficiency benefits but without compromise to the design. For marquetry I use a chevalet – a very precise 18th century scroll saw – because the precision is well beyond any power tool. I cut veneers by hand but use a vacuum press to apply them to substrates, except when hammer veneering is better.
