Pysanky is an ancient meditative art originating in Eastern Europe that transforms wishes or prayers into visual images. Real eggs are decorated using a wax resist method of dying. (All of my eggs are emptied after the design is completed.) The egg itself is a symbol of life and rebirth. Additional symbols representing prayers or wishes are drawn or “written” on the egg. I use both traditional East European symbols as well as traditional Celtic symbols on my eggs. The decorated eggs were believed to have great healing and protective power.
When I first learned the art of pysanky, I fell in love with it. I loved the ancient history of celebration, the beauty of the colors, the prayerfulness communicated through the symbols, and the meditative experience of creating the work. Pysanky are a beautiful way to express wishes or prayers of love, health, prosperity, or faith for weddings, graduations, health struggles, or any time loved ones need to know they are remembered. Many also collect pysanky as a hobby. It is my sincere hope that those who come to own the pysanky I create will experience the blessings “written” on the eggs.
