Experience a sheep of a different color!
small batch artisan yarns, exclusively from locally sourced fiber, breed-specific, hand-dyed, many weights
Tour the warehouse and learn why different breeds of sheep make very different types of yarn. Take home some sustainably produced, all local yarn or fiber to knit, crochet, spin, felt or weave with. We will be working for sure on Wednesdays from 10 to 1, but are happy to set up tours or help you do a little personal shopping at most times!
We are shepherds who love wool!
We select the best fleeces from pure-bred sheep from our Virginia farms, and from other small flocks in our region. By paying a fair price for fleece and listing the source, we support and promote other shepherds and sheep breeds.
Solitude Wool yarns are designed to complement the unique fleece characteristics of each breed and are gently processed at small American mills. In addition to yarns for knitting and crocheting, we also design yarns and fibers for felting, weaving and spinning.
Sheep grow fleece in many wonderful colors and we offer many un-dyed fibers—but we love color and wool takes dye so beautifully! Gretchen Frederick, founding partner, brings her personal color sense and professional background in art and design to hand-dyeing Solitude Wool. Using a variety of methods and dyes, each dyelot is unique. Because there are no formulas, we recommend buying an extra skein. We are always willing to buy back unopened skeins.
